A Jasper County judge has granted a rural Webb City man a suspended sentence and probation on a conviction for beating another man with a wrench.
Circuit Judge Gayle Crane assessed Cale B. Cooper, 43, four years in prison for second-degree assault at a hearing Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court, but suspended execution of the sentence and placed him on probation for five years.
Cooper pleaded guilty Aug. 20 in a plea deal with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office limiting the prison time he might face to four years. A conviction could have carried punishment of up to seven years.
A probable-cause affidavit states that the defendant hit Corey Dickson about his head and face with a wrench on Aug. 14, 2011, at Cooper’s home, 10394 County Road 200.
The judge ordered that Cooper pay restitution of $3,348.99 to Dickson in monthly payments of $100 and that he have no further contact with the victim. The defendant also was ordered to complete anger-management counseling and to perform 75 hours of community service.
