Man from Reeds granted suspension of jail sentence

A Reeds man pleaded guilty Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin to a reduced charge in a felony assault case and was assessed a suspended sentence.

Cory L. Wright, 23, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in a plea agreement with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office. Circuit Judge David Dally accepted the plea deal and assessed Wright one year in jail, with execution of the sentence suspended and the defendant placed on unsupervised probation for two years.

Wright had been facing a felony count of second-degree assault for the beating of Jay W. Northern, 29, also of Reeds, on Sept. 10, 2011, in Sarcoxie. A probable-cause affidavit alleged that Wright knocked out some of Northern’s teeth and inflicted cuts on his face and a knot on the back of his head. Northern was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.
