Fire set on roof of Planned Parenthood building

JOPLIN, Mo. — For the second time in three nights, someone tried to start a fire on the roof of Planned Parenthood's health center at 710 S. Illinois Ave.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, they succeeded in causing minor damage to the building before a police officer arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire.

The incident seemed a repeat of an arson attempt at the health center about midnight Wednesday. Images of suspects in hooded sweatshirts or coats throwing bags on the roof were captured by a video surveillance camera both nights.

On Wednesday night, the suspect apparently failed to ignite the bag containing incendiary materials. Joplin police say that the suspect Friday night can be seen on video footage lighting the bag.

Investigators are unable to tell at this time if the suspects are the same person. Both suspects wore bulky clothing with hoods pulled up over their heads.

City and state fire marshals, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting police in the investigation.
