Carterville teen draws sentence in robbery case

A judge on Monday assessed an 18-year-old Carterville resident at least 120 days of shock incarceration for forcibly robbing a woman of her purse.

Judge Gayle Crane at a hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court assessed Hayden M. Baugh seven years in prison on a conviction for second-degree robbery.

The judge sentenced the defendant under the provisions of the state’s shock-incarceration program, which requires that he serve 120 days before the court reviews his case for possible placement on probation.

Baugh stole the purse of Jackie Ellis on Dec. 11 in Carterville.

The victim reportedly had given Baugh a ride, and he grabbed her purse as he was getting out of the car. When she tried to stop him, Baugh punched her in the forehead several times, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

The defendant also is awaiting sentencing on a vehicle tampering charge in another division of the court.

That conviction stems from the theft last October of a minivan from the parking lot of the YMCA in Carthage. His plea agreement with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office calls for whatever time he receives on that conviction to run concurrently with the sentence in the robbery case.
