Shooting probe on hold; police wait to speak with wounded man

A young man who was shot in the chest during a confrontation with others at a Joplin residence early Monday morning is expected to survive.

Police on Tuesday identified the man wounded in a shooting at a residence on East Sunny Acres Lane as Justin S. Johnson, 25, of Carterville.

Joplin police Lt. Brian Lewis said Johnson was continuing to recuperate at Freeman Hospital West, but had yet to be questioned by detectives. Lewis said Johnson, who underwent surgery to repair his chest wound, remains too groggy from medication to be interviewed.

“We’re going to go back Thursday and get a statement from him,” Lewis said.

No arrests have been made related to the shooting. Police are trying to determine if the 21-year-old man who shot Johnson was justified. Lewis said no decision would be made in the case until detectives can speak with Johnson.

Johnson and three male companions went to the address looking for a 24-year-old occupant of the residence who had been at a party that they had been attending outside city limits. A dispute arose at the party and the 24-year-old man went home. But the others showed up at his house and confronted him in his front yard.

The man who shot Johnson became involved at that point, attempting to pull the occupant of the address to safety inside his house. Johnson was shot when he allegedly tried to follow them inside the residence.

Not intoxicated

Police have characterized the dispute as alcohol-fueled. But the man who shot Johnson was not intoxicated, according to Lewis.
