Woman to stand trial on felony count of child abuse

A rural Joplin woman waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday on a felony count of child abuse related to the alleged bruising of her 12-year-old daughter’s buttocks and arms.

Jacqlyn A. Rawlings, 30, waived the hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court and was ordered bound over for trial. Associate Circuit Judge Richard Copeland set her initial appearance in a trial division of the court for May 24.

Rawlings is accused of inflicting the bruises Sept. 19 while disciplining the girl at home. The girl told investigators that her mother made her grab the edge of a table while she swatted her with a paddle with holes drilled through it, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

The defendant acknowledged swatting her daughter, but did not realize it left any marks, according to the affidavit.

She told an investigator that it was a belt that she used and not a paddle.
