Woman struck in back of head, robbed of $5

An assault and robbery of a woman in the 1800 block of West Seventh Street on Saturday remains under investigation by Joplin police.

Amber N. Bates, 26, told police that she was sleeping near some railroad tracks between 6:15 and 6:50 a.m. when someone struck her in the head with an object, and stole $5 and a pack of cigarettes from her. Police Lt. Brian Lewis said Bates sought treatment at the emergency room of Mercy Hospital for a gash on the back of her head.

Her assailant was described as a man in his 40s, about 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, with a medium build, and short, brown hair. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, and he had gold paint around his mouth, apparently from “huffing” paint fumes, Lewis said.
