Man faces charge in statutory case

The Jasper County prosecutor’s office has filed a statutory rape charge against a 21-year-old man for allegedly having sexual relations with a 16-year-old Joplin girl.

Fred L. Edwards, of rural Carl Junction, was arrested Tuesday afternoon in the 1800 block of South Maiden Lane after an investigation by Joplin police. He was charged with second-degree statutory rape.

Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department said Edwards is accused of having sex with the girl in June and July of this year. The matter was reported to police by a member of the girl’s family after the relative learned that she was pregnant, Niess said.
