Teen to serve term for assaulting officer

A Jasper County judge assessed an 18-year-old man five years in prison for a felony assault on a Joplin police officer.

Circuit Judge Gayle Crane sentenced Allen Russell to the prison term at a hearing Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin.

Russell was 17 when he was arrested Dec. 4 for scuffling with Officer Joshua Hanes inside a residence at 319 W. 16th St. The officer had stopped his patrol car to investigate screams he heard coming from the residence.

Hanes was met at the door by a young man who tried to pull him away and a woman who slammed the door on his foot. In the course of attempting to arrest the woman for misdemeanor assault, Hanes was attacked by Russell, who choked and punched him, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

Russell pleaded guilty May 14 to a felony count of assault on a law enforcement officer in an open plea that could have drawn up to seven years in prison.
