Neosho man accused of sexual relations with minor

NEOSHO, Mo. — A 22-year-old Neosho man has been charged with three felony offenses stemming from an alleged sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Lt. David Kennedy of the Neosho Police Department said Mahony B. Mathew was taken into custody at 12:21 p.m. today following an investigation of sexual contact reported to have taken place with the girl near the National Fish Hatchery on Park Street early Monday morning.

Kennedy said the family of the girl reported the matter to police and she was interviewed today at the Children's Center in Joplin. The Newton County prosecutor's office subsequently filed two counts of second-degree statutory rape and one count of first-degree statutory rape against Mathew.

A probable-cause affidavit filed with the charges alleges that the suspect admitted to investigators that he has had sexual intercourse with the girl on several occasions. He told investigators that the first time he had relations with her was in 2010 when she was 12, according to the affidavit.
