A state fire investigator was unable to determine the cause of a blaze Monday night that destroyed a residence south of Joplin.
Five area fire departments responded to a 6:04 p.m. call reporting a fire on Douglas Fir Road. The occupants of the residence, the family of John Kevin Manard, were not at home at the time, and the fire was reported by a passer-by, according to Deputy Chief Michael White of the Redings Mill Fire Department.
Flames had broken through about 30 percent of the single-story, brick home by the time firefighters arrived, White said. By the time the fire was extinguished two hours later, the home had been destroyed, he said. No injuries were reported, he said.
Redings Mill firefighters received assistance from the Seneca Rural Fire Protection District, and the Joplin, Carl Junction and Galena (Kan.) fire departments.
