Couple in jail in wake of assault on Joplin man

From The Associated Press

— A Joplin man and his girlfriend are being held on charges that he pulled a knife on another man in a dispute over money and that she slashed the victim’s knee with a machete.

John W. Park, 39, and Angela R. Turner, 24, were arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon after a confrontation early Monday morning with Jesse J. Roach, 41, inside Roach’s home in the 800 block of South Pennsylvania Avenue. Park and Turner remained in custody Wednesday at the Joplin City Jail on $1,000 bonds.

Police Lt. Brian Lewis said Roach recently had been letting Park and Turner stay in his home.

They paid him $225 rent a few days ago, but then decided they no longer wished to stay there and asked for their money back. Roach balked, and Park allegedly pulled a small knife on him.

When Roach tried to disarm Park, Turner allegedly slashed his knee with a machete.

Lewis said Roach did not require transport to a hospital for treatment of the injury.
