Two garage fires reported less than 40 minutes apart Tuesday in the same Joplin neighborhood are being investigated by police and fire officials as cases of arson.
The Joplin Fire Department responded to fires at 531 N. Moffet Ave. and 707 N. Sergeant Ave. In both instances, detached garages were set on fire, with the Moffet Avenue fire reported at 4:34 p.m. and the Sergeant Avenue fire at 5:12 p.m.
Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department said an estimated $20,000 worth of fire damage was reported at each property. Investigators believe the fires may be linked, but no arrests had been made in the two cases by Wednesday afternoon.
