MIAMI, Okla. —
The death of a baby boy in a house fire near Peoria on Sunday afternoon remains under scrutiny by state fire investigators.
Four area fire departments responded to the 3:30 p.m. fire in a frame home near Peoria.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said a baby was taken to Baptist Integris Regional Health Center in Miami, where he was pronounced dead of injuries sustained in the fire. Deputies identified the 10-month-old child as Isaac Shores.
JoAnne Sellars, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s Office, said the infant was found in a bassinet at the opposite end of the house from where the fire began in the kitchen. Sellars said the child’s body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Tulsa.
The cause of the fire in the relatively small home of 1,176 square feet remains under investigation by both state and local authorities, she said.
“There’s nothing suspicious about the fire (itself) at this time,” Sellars said.
But investigators were looking into questions about who was in the home and providing care of the child at the time of the fire, she said. No injuries were reported to any other occupants of the home, she said.
