JOPLIN, Mo. —

A Joplin man was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison for an assault on his girlfriend two years ago.

Circuit Judge David Dally assessed Curtis J. Downton, 54, the prison term at a hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court. A jury found Downton guilty of second-degree domestic assault of Catherine Welch, 39, in a trial Oct. 2.

Downton and Welch had been in a relationship for about a year when the assault took place March 3, 2010, inside an apartment they shared at 1707 Campbell Parkway in Joplin. He was accused of hitting her several times with his fist, slamming her head against a wall, choking her with a cane, and kicking her and stomping on her in the course of an assault that lasted almost three hours. She suffered injuries to her head, neck, arms, hands and chest.
