Truck driver dies in fiery crash on Interstate 44

The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed Wednesday night when his rig left the eastbound lanes of Interstate 44 in Ottawa County, hit a tree and exploded into flames, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The accident took place at 7:24 p.m. about eight miles east of Miami, where the truck struck an embankment and became airborne before running into the tree, the state patrol said.

The Miami Fire Department responded. The driver was pinned inside the wreckage, and rescue workers needed three hours and 37 minutes to extricate his body.

The name of the driver was being withheld pending positive identification by the Office of the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner and notification of family.
