Joplin woman hurt in traffic accident just south of town



A local woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday on Highway 86, just south of the Joplin city limits in Newton County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Lonna J. Lewis, 79, a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, John T. Lewis, 80, of Joplin, was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

A southbound vehicle driven by Denesa M. Boman, 19, of Joplin, was stopped in traffic and was struck from behind by the Lewis vehicle, according to the patrol.

• A Pierce City man was injured in a single-vehicle accident shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday on Highway 97, four miles north of Pierce City in Lawrence County, according to the state patrol.

Ben W. Beachamp, 37, was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

Beachamp failed to negotiate a curve, and his southbound vehicle ran off the road and struck a sign and a ditch, crossed back across the road, and struck a sign, a fence and a tree, according to the patrol.
