Early morning fire claims life near Columbus, Kan.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — An early morning house fire today near Columbus, Kan., has resulted in a fatality, the sheriff's office is reporting.

The fire was in a home three miles north of Columbus, and is believed to have begun about 5 a.m. Firefighters who arrived on the scene found the body of a deceased adult, but no name has been released yet.

According to the sheriff's office, the body could not be officially identified and has been transported to Kansas City for an autopsy.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. It is under investigation and officials with the sheriff's department and the Kansas fire marshal's office are still processing the scene.
