Joplin man’s death ruled case of suicide



The Jasper County coroner has ruled the shooting death of a Joplin man on Tuesday a case of suicide.

Police officers who were called at 12:39 p.m. Tuesday to 1823 S. Sergeant Ave. found Merritt E. Cottengim, 59, dead of a gunshot wound to the head in an upstairs room of the residence.

Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said no foul play was suspected. Coroner Rob Chappel said the death will be ruled a suicide.
