Carthage man faces state prison term in molestation case

A Jasper County judge assessed a Carthage man three years in prison Monday for sexual abuse of a girl under the age of 12.

Circuit Judge Gayle Crane sentenced Myron P. Colwell, 24, to concurrent terms of three years each on two convictions for deviate sexual assault.

Colwell pleaded guilty Sept. 11 in a plea deal with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office. The agreement capped the prison time he would be assessed at no more than three years.

A probable-cause affidavit states that Colwell sexually abused the girl on more than one occasion in 2006 and 2007 when she was of elementary school age. He originally faced two Class B felony counts of child molestation that were reduced to deviate sexual assault in the plea offer.
