  • Several people hurt in accidents on roads in area

    A Kansas woman was injured in a single-vehicle accident at 4 p.m. Monday on Newton Road, four miles east of Diamond in Newton County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

  • Man accused of scamming elderly takes plea offer

    A Reeds man implicated in alleged scams and thefts in Jasper County primarily involving elderly victims pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of burglary in a plea agreement. Shawn D. Houston, 30, pleaded guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin to counts of first-degree burglary and second-degree burglary in a plea deal that would dismiss counts of stealing and financial exploitation of an elderly person.

  • Formal charges sought in gun case in Pittsburg

    Formal charges were being sought against an Illinois man arrested Monday morning in possession of a handgun. Timothy J. Winner, 55, of Tallula, Illinois, was booked into Crawford County Jail on probable-cause charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and criminal use of a weapon on school property following a traffic stop about 7:20 a.m. in the driveway of the high school’s parking lot on Fourth Street.

  • Burglary suspects accidentally call 911

    Three suspects in a home invasion in Joplin were located and taken into custody after accidentally calling 911 from the parking lot of a bank. Police received a report at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday of a burglary at the home of Cheryl Paugh, 44, in the 1000 block of West Third Street. Paugh told officers her front door was kicked in and several intruders burst inside, one of whom grabbed her by the arm and threw her to the floor.

  • Defendant gets 15 years for nude photos of girl

    A judge assessed a rural Joplin man 15 years in prison Friday for deceiving a girl into posing for nude photographs when she was 9 or 10 years old under a pretense that the pictures were needed to make her a rock star. Circuit Judge John LePage sentenced Richard D. McNabb II to 15 years for sexual exploitation of a minor and four years for sexual misconduct involving a child at a hearing in Newton County Circuit Court in Neosho.

  • Neosho couple’s relationship ends in murder-suicide

    Authorities believe the deaths of an older couple whose bodies were found Thursday afternoon along Route AA south of Neosho were a murder-suicide. Sheriff Ken Copeland said a passing motorist reported finding the bodies of Edwin M. Kelley and Ann C. Kelley about 2:30 p.m. near two vehicles parked to the side of the road between Interstate 49 and Gateway Road.
