Man wounded in post-party shooting
A shooting at a residence in Joplin early Monday morning sent a young man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest, according to police. Lt. Brian Lewis said a caller alerted police at 1:25 a.m. that he shot a man who was threatening a resident on East Sunny Acres Lane in Joplin.

Prison term meted out in Carthage stabbing case
Bobby D. Sweeney accepted a plea deal Monday that will send him to prison for six years for seriously injuring another man in a stabbing two years ago in Carthage. Circuit Judge Gayle Crane assessed Sweeney the prison term after the 35-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to a reduced count of second-degree assault at a hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin.

Vernon County man bound over for trial in estranged wife’s murder
Bob T. Beisly II waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday on a charge that he is responsible for his estranged wife’s murder almost four years ago. Beisly, 57, waived the hearing in Vernon County Circuit Court and was ordered bound over for trial. Associate Judge Neal Quitno set his initial appearance in a trial division of the court for Tuesday.

Mistrial declared in Joplin drug trafficking case
A mistrial was declared Friday in the drug-trafficking case of a Joplin man when a juror disclosed that she knew a witness for the defense. The disclosure came on the second day of Gary L. Mitchell’s trial in Jasper County Circuit Court and forced Circuit Judge David Dally to declare the mistrial.
