  • Defendant bound over for trial in sex abuse case

    A Jasper County judge found probable cause at a hearing Thursday for a rural Carthage man to stand trial on charges that he sexually abused a young woman. Associate Circuit Judge Richard Copeland ordered Hector J. Gonzalez, 50, to stand trial on three counts of deviate sexual assault at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin.

  • Grand jury indicts Miami bank robbery suspect

    A federal grand jury has indicted a suspect in a bank robbery attempt last year in Miami that led to a fatal crash. An indictment handed up this week in U.S. District Court in Tulsa charges Francis H. Dishmon, 51, of Tulsa, with attempted bank robbery and killing a truck driver while attempting to avoid apprehension.

    A 71-year-old Joplin woman was injured in a single-car accident at 8:08 a.m. Tuesday on McClelland Boulevard at 32nd Street, according to a Joplin police report.

  • Ex-councilman, crossing guard pleads guilty to child molestation

    A former Baxter Springs city councilman and school crossing guard pleaded guilty Tuesday in Cherokee County District Court to six counts of having sexual contact with children. Stanley Pickering, 79, was wearing orange Cherokee County Jail garb and shackles around his ankles as he waived his preliminary hearing and pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated indecent liberties, one count of aggravated criminal sodomy and one count of aggravated indecent solicitation.
