Mother draws prison term in child’s strangulation death
A judge ruled Tuesday that a Pittsburg woman should serve 61 months in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the strangulation death of her 13-month-old son. District Judge A.J. Wachter assessed Cara M. Lloyd, 29, the prison term in the death of Cory Jones Jr. on Oct. 29, 2011, at a residence in Frontenac.

Crawford County man pleads guilty in federal tax-fraud case
A Crawford County (Kan.) man pleaded guilty Friday to receiving millions of dollars in tax refunds by filing false federal tax returns. Jerold D. Fisher, 49, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Topeka to one count of filing a false federal tax return and will be sentenced May 27.
Suspect in stolen truck stops train
Jasper County deputies on Thursday afternoon pursued a suspect in a stolen truck to Kansas, where he forced a train to come to an emergency stop before finally surrendering. Capt. Derek Walrod of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said the pursuit of Joe Bob Green, 32, of Joplin, began near Carl Junction.
Another Baxter Springs resident facing child sex charges
Authorities arrested another Baxter Springs resident this week on charges of having sexual contact with children. Agents with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Baxter Springs police arrested Paul D. Johnson, 60, at his home on Wednesday in the wake of allegations of sexual contact with children as recently as this year and dating back as far as 2008.
