Miami chamber schedules event
MIAMI, Okla. — The Miami Area Chamber of Commerce is staging its annual employee extravaganza at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Miami Civic Center. The event was created to give supervisors and managers a chance to show their appreciation for their employees.
The theme this year is a masquerade party. The session will include dinner, games, prizes and giveaways. Tickets are $15. Details: (918) 542-4481.
NEO receives Walton donation
MIAMI, Okla. — The Walton Family Foundation recently donated $5,000 to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami. The money will provide academic scholarships and benefit the golf program.
The Walton Family Foundation honors the values of Sam and Helen Walton, the founders of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
Mount Carmel receives honor
PITTSBURG, Kan. — Mount Carmel Regional Cancer Center recently received three-year approval from the American College of Surgeons for its oncology program.
Only one in four cancer programs at hospitals across the country receive the honor.
Manufacturers to hold summit
The Southwest Area Manufacturers Association is holding its fifth annual summit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the Oasis Convention Center in Springfield.
The event offers an update on the industry, reports, survey results and exhibits. The cost is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers. Registration: (417) 863-7262 or www.samamo.org.
Grant application packets available
The Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau’s special event grant application packets are available for fiscal year 2009. A total of $120,000 is available to help pay for the marketing of events that promote tourism for Joplin. Events should be scheduled between Nov. 1, 2008, and Oct. 31, 2009.
Applicants must be not-for-profit organizations, museums, attractions or other tourism entities.
A maximum of $20,000 can be given for each event. Applications may be picked up at Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main St.
People in business:
Pittsburg (Kan.) State University recently honored three business leaders for supporting the school.
Tom E. Beal, chief executive officer and president of Beal Properties in Kansas City, was honored for serving on the PSU Foundation’s board of trustees and the Presidents Society. He helped establish a Students in Free Enterprise chapter at PSU. He graduated from PSU in 1952.
Ken and Debbie Brock, owners of Names and Numbers in Pittsburg, were honored for serving on the advisory board for PSU’s school of business and the board of directors.

Clifford Wert, regional president for U.S. Bank in Joplin, recently was honored with the bank’s Five Star Volunteer Award for his work at the Bridge Ministries, where he is a member of the board of trustees and a past treasurer. Through the award, the Bridge Ministries will receive a $1,000 donation from U.S. Bank.

Brent Reeves and Daniel LaDue of Extreme Sports Scuba in Joplin recently received their assistant instructor certification. It qualifies them to assist Scuba Diving International instructors during diving courses. Both men are members of the Newton County Dive Team.
