rmckinney@joplinglobe.com RIVERTON, Kan. — Emily Gipson has a year remaining at Riverton High School, but the 17-year-old already has a taste of what her chosen career field is like. Gipson recently spent a day shadowing Charlotte Vanslyke, a radiology technologist at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Mo. Gipson observed as Vanslyke performed more than 10 procedures including X-rays, CT scans and magnetic resonance imaging. She said her favorite part of the day was viewing the detailed X-ray images of a patient’s ankle and another patient’s knee. “I’ve gained firsthand experience,” Gipson said. “She’s seen a little of everything,” Vanslyke added. Gipson is a student in the health science careers program offered by Riverton High School. This is the third year for the program taught by Mia Elliott. Elliott is a registered nurse with 14 years’ experience working in hospitals. It is a two-year program that since last year also has been open to students from Baxter Springs and Galena high schools. This year, the program had 20 students from Baxter Springs, 13 from Riverton and five from Galena. Todd Berry, Riverton High School principal, said the program was opened to students in Baxter Springs and Galena to ensure that it has enough students to sustain it. The students last week shadowed staff members at Freeman and St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin. Gipson said all students in the program become certified in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. She said she and her fellow students this year took a field trip to the Bodies Revealed exhibit at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. The exhibit features preserved human bodies that show the body’s major systems and effects of disease. Gipson said students also learn about taking blood pressure readings and other vital signs in class. Elliott said students earlier this year spent time in a surgical suite at St. John’s, where nurses explained to students about working in surgery, and about instruments and equipment.
