Chamber group attends summit
Several members of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce recently attended the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Summit in Washington, D.C.
The group included Scott and Nancy Hutson, owners of Cycle Connection in Joplin, and Kim Vann, business development director for the chamber.
Crossland begins‘green’ campaign
Crossland Construction Inc., a contracting company based in Columbus, Kan., recently announced its environmental sustainability program. The company is targeting several areas of its business, including improving fuel efficiency, starting a recycling program and conducting LEED certification classes.
The on-site recycling program will be the largest part of the “green” program.
BBC Electric earns award
BBC Electric Services of Crestline, Kan., has been named a recipient of the Public Works Project of the Year Award in a disaster or emergency situation for restoring power to Greensburg, Kan., after it was hit by a tornado on May 4, 2007.
The company worked with Professional Engineering Consultants to build a new electrical distribution system for the city.
The three-phase Greensburg project was completed in five months, seven months sooner than originally predicted. The design phase was completed in 100 days. It usually takes up to eight months.

Freeman Health System recently honored several employees for their years of service.
LaDean Reed was recognized for 50 years of service; Michael Mitchell, 35 years; Dorothy Andrews, Diane Jackson and Glenna Terry, 30 years; and Donna Brown, Bonnie McDaniel and Rhonda McFarland, 25 years.
Susan Schiller, a Freeman Birthing Center nurse, was recognized with the Golden Scissors Award for excellence in patient care.

Martin Penning recently was named director of commercial operations-western for Empire District Electric Co. That area includes Joplin, Webb City and Neosho, as well as operations in Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Penning has worked at Empire since 1980, working his way up from system protection engineer. In his new position, he will oversee Empire’s western division line operations, construction design, substation maintenance and community relations.

J.R. Mathews, vice chairman of the Quapaw Tribe, has been elected treasurer of the National Indian Gaming Association for a two-year term.
Mathews is vice chairman of the Downstream Casino Resort Authority that is building a resort near Joplin.

Christopher Dumm, Joplin estate planning attorney with the Elder Law Center, recently attended the Veterans Benefit Institute in Chicago, Ill., where he learned about coordinating the VA Aid and Attendance program with the benefits of Medicaid and helping wartime veterans avoid penalties.

Robert Dodson, medical director of trauma services at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, recently was appointed to Missouri’s state advisory council on emergency medical services by Gov. Matt Blunt.
Dodson will make recommendations to Blunt and the Missouri General Assembly on policies, plans and procedures, and suggest regulations to improve statewide emergency medical services.
