PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Mt. Carmel Board of Trustees recently approved the relocation and expansion of the hospital’s Cardiac Step Down Unit. The $2.5 million project includes the relocation of the unit to a portion of the hospital’s unfinished fifth floor. The new unit will have 12 private rooms designed for cardiac patients and will be close to the Intensive Care Unit. “Because of their conditions, cardiology patients need a more intense level of care,” said Cheryl Jacobson, director of critical care. “By increasing the room size and adding three additional nursing stations in the unit, we will be able to deliver an even higher level of patient care.” People in business Michelle Carpenter has been awarded the Humanitarian award from the World Outreach Foundation in Kansas City. An active hospice worker for the last 17 years, she was honored because of her volunteer leadership and outreach to those in need. In 2001, Carpenter was the first person to receive the Heart of Hospice award as the outstanding hospice volunteer of the year in Missouri. She also received the 2004 Anne Robb Townsend award for philanthropic work. In 2006, she was tri-president of the Harvest Ball, an event that raised $4 million over the years for needy people in the Kansas City area. Carpenter is a 1982 graduate of Missouri Southern State University and a 1984 graduate of Pittsburg (Kan.) State University. Terri Thornton, loan officer with the Joplin Metro Credit Union, received a scholarship through the Missouri Credit Union League for Consumer Lending. The school was held in San Francisco. Joplin Metro Credit Union also received first place in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition contest in its asset size category for the state of Missouri. The award recognizes credit unions and chapters for their work to strengthen a community. Ron Petersen Sr., of Carthage, has assumed the post of district governor for District 6110 and will serve Rotary President D.K. Lee, of Seoul, South Korea, as an officer of Rotary International, headquartered in Evanston, Ill. District 6110 is comprised of 79 clubs involving nearly 5,200 Rotarians and is the largest district in membership in America encompassing the four corners of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
