dshipman@joplinglobe.com Roy’s Costume and Formal Wear has a new look. Roy’s has been at 2401 E. Seventh St. in Joplin for nearly 60 years, and in that time the business has amassed a collection of costumes and other unique items. Now, everything has been shipped across town to a larger site in the old B&B Discount building at 401 S. Grand Ave. “When the movers first saw what they would be doing, they just stood there stunned for a few minutes thinking, ‘Oh my God, what have I gotten myself into?’” said Karen Lawson, who has owned Roy’s for the past two years. “I knew when I bought the business that I wanted to move it. It is an older building. It has inadequate heating and cooling, and just wasn’t convenient.” Lawson said the Seventh Street location had 15 individual rooms that were used for displaying and storing costumes, which made it difficult for customers. The new location will have two rooms and almost 6,000 square feet of space. “It will be different, a whole new Roy’s,” Lawson said. “It is an icon, and I have had a lot of people say, once they heard that we were moving, that they grew up going to Roy’s, that they got their first tuxedo there for their wedding like 30 years ago.” Lawson said the move, which is expected to wrap up this week, is the first step. The next phase will be setting up the new site and getting it ready to open to the public on Monday, Aug. 11. A grand-opening celebration is scheduled for Sept. 20. “It is hard for us to close at all,” she said. “I have had several calls saying they had a costuming emergency, and we have made arrangements for weddings and a couple of plays that we have had to make special arrangements for as well. Our only slow time of year is now, and it’s still busy.” Lawson said many of the items at Roy’s have been collected over the years, and some special care had to be taken with certain items. In all, Lawson said, more the 10,000 garments and 30,000 accessories are going to be moved by the end of the this week. “I have dropped over 3,000 feet of nylon rope to hold the 700-plus feet of pipe that it takes to hang 10,000 hangers,” she said. “It has been a six-month process just to get here, but in my mind I have been working on this since I bought the business.”
