msurbrugg@joplinglobe.com MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Two portable corrals — one in Lawrence County and one in Polk County — are available to get wandering cattle off roads following storms or other emergencies. The corrals are part of a project that seeks to put similar units in each of 18 counties in Southwest Missouri. Until then, the two units are to respond to emergencies in the region. Each corral can hold 140 800-pound bovine. They cost $17,770 combined, Amanda Marney, University of Missouri emergency preparedness specialist at Mount Vernon, said each county also should have a plan to house wandering animals in fairgrounds or rodeo arenas until owners arrive, she said. The corrals are to supplement these sites. The Lawrence County corral is stored at Mount Vernon. Mike Rowe, Miller, is the emergency management director for Lawrence County. Marney is part of the university’s extension program that is a partner in the fourth annual campaign to show communities how to be better prepared for emergencies.
