MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Oct. 10 is the deadline for cattle producers to enter steers in the 2008-09 Missouri Steer Feedout. Each entry must have a minimum of five head born after Jan. 1, 2008. Calves must be weaned at least 28 days prior to Oct. 10, be broke to eat a bunk, dehorned, castrated and healed. Birth dates and sire identity are requested. Calves are to be delivered on Nov. 4 to the Joplin Regional Stockyards, where they will be taken to a feedlot in Iowa. The program is sponsored by the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, University of Missouri, Iowa State Extension and the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Cooperative at Lewis, Iowa. The feedout enables participants to evaluate how their cattle perform in the feedlot and their carcass characteristics. For details, or to enter steers, contact Eldon Cole at (417) 466-3102. Rental rates up for farmland TOPEKA, Kan. — Cash rental rates for cropland and pasture in Kansas were up in 2008, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service. The average cost to rent an acre of irrigated cropland is $88, compared with $82 in 2007. Cropland not irrigated cost $45 an acre to rent, compared with $41 in 2007. Pasture rent averaged $15.50 an acre, up $1 from 2007. Rental average rates in Southeast Kansas are $71 an acre for irrigated ground compared with $70 in 2007. Land not irrigated averages $46 an acre, compared with $41 last year. Pasture rent in Southeast Kansas averages $18.80 an acre, compared with $17.60 in 2007. The average value of all farmland and buildings across the state for 2008 is estimated at $1,170 per acre, compared with $1,090 in 2007 and $940 in 2006. Brown recluse spiders pose risk
