msurbrugg@joplinglobe.com PARSONS, Kan. — Wheat farmers could not be blamed for using a crystal ball to determine which variety to plant this fall in order to get the best yields in 2009. No two years are alike for rainfall, disease and insects. Kansas wheat performance tests in Labette and Cherokee counties evaluated the same varieties but found that yields varied. The wheat in Labette County averaged almost 50 bushels per acre, with the top yield at 64.2 bushels per acre for HV9W02-942R. The same varieties in Cherokee County averaged 63.4 bushels per acre, and HV9W02-942R was one of three varieties that produced more than 67 bushels per acre. The Kansas office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service said the state produced 356 million bushels of wheat in 2008, 25 percent more than a year ago. The state average yield came in at 40 bushels per acre, up seven bushels from 2007. Wheat was among the topics at the annual grain tour held on Sept. 25 at Kansas State University’s Southeast Agricultural Research Center in Parsons. Ken Kelley, the center’s crops and soils agronomist, said higher fertilizer costs will cause more producers to use less nitrogen on wheat fields. Tests continue to show the best fertilizer return comes when fertilizer is knifed into the soil, getting the nutrients below residue on the surface. Applying 120 pounds of nitrogen per acre eliminates the impact carried forward from any previous crop on wheat yields, he said. Leaf rust remains an important threat in all parts of the state and was probably the most serious disease across the state in 2008, according to information provided to farmers at the meeting.
