Wally Kennedy: Flavor of the 4-States whets appetites

There are two events I always plan to attend this time of year. One is the Maple Leaf parade at Carthage, which will be held Saturday. The other is Flavor of the 4-States, which will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Joplin.

The parade, the premier fall event for Southwest Missouri, is a smorgasbord of entries. You never know what you will see or who you will see. The same is true for Flavor of the 4-States. You can get a taste of whatever it is you are craving, and chances are quite good you’ll see someone you have not seen in a while.

This is the 12th year for what best can be called a “food lollapalooza.” Ticket prices have been slashed to the original 1996 prices. Advance tickets are $12. Tickets at the door are $15. On the back of the ticket is a $10 free play at Buffalo Run Casino.

Tickets may be purchased at Buffalo Run Casino, Granny Shaffer’s in Webb City and Joplin, Taco Hut, Big R’s Bar-B-Q, Sultan of Smoke, First State Bank branches, Gringo’s in Webb City, and the Southwest Area Career Center in Monett.

The event is sponsored by the Missouri Restaurant Association and Buffalo Run Casino. This year’s Mardi Gras theme will feature Cajun-style music by the Ben Miller Band. The fun is “guar-an-teed.” Proceeds fund scholarships for young people in the culinary arts.

Cheryle Finley, food columnist for the Globe, and Suzie Jamelle, head chef at the Dooky Chase restaurant in New Orleans, will demonstrate how to make Cajun-style foods. For me, Cajun is easy: Just add red pepper sauce to whatever it is you’re cooking.

Now, here comes the hard part. This year’s event will feature 55 booths. So, who do you mention because there’s not enough space in this column to mention them all. So, here’s a flavor of this year’s Flavor of the 4-States: Mythos Euro Greek Kuzina, Wilder’s/Kitchen Pass, Big R’s Bar-B-Q, Club 1201, Red Oak Steakhouse at Downstream Casino, Coleman House at Buffalo Run Casino, Red Onion/Bella Peppers, Columbia Traders, Rib Crib, Richardson’s Restaurant & Pub, Cracker Barrel, Dusty’s BBQ, El Charro, Fazoli’s, Sportsman’s Park, Golden Corral, Granny Shaffer’s, Gringo’s, Sultan of Smoke, Taco Hut, Hello Thailand, The Bayou Lunchbox, Twin Bridges Restaurant at Wyandotte Casino, Whiskey Creek, Woody’s Woodfire Pizza, Moe’s, and the Holiday Inn.

Remember to jot down “Flavor” on your calendar for Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Ziggie’s

Ziggie’s Cafe is set to open Nov. 5 in the former Andrew’s Restaurant at La Quinta Inn, 3320 S. Range Line Road. Ziggie’s, with headquarters in Springfield, now has several locations across southern Missouri. The latest storefront recently opened in Nevada.

Ziggie’s is a family-owned restaurant with the motto: “Generous portions at a fair price served fast by friendly people equals happy customers who keep coming back for more.”

Breakfast is served anytime. On the menu are soups, salads, pasta, steaks, chops, roasts, Italian dishes, seafood and desserts.

Ziggie’s opens one day after Election Day. I sure hope they serve strong coffee, because I think we’re all going to need it.

More on Denny’s

The grapevine is still humming over the unexpected closure about three weeks ago of Denny’s Restaurant, a South Range Line landmark since 1971. Word has it that the closing came as a shock to the people who worked there — at least one of them had been there for nearly 25 years.
