Preferred Family Healthcare opened adolescent treatment program in Joplin on Tuesday

JOPLIN, Mo. — The grand opening of Preferred Family Healthcare’s residential adolescent treatment program was held Tuesday. The center is at 5620 West Wildwood Parkway in Joplin.

Preferred Family Healthcare began construction in May of 2012 on its $4 million, 21,000-square-foot center serving adolescents and their families who have substance abuse issues in Joplin and Southwest Missouri.

PFH shut down its adolescent residential substance abuse services after the 2011 tornado destroyed a group home as well as its site at 20th Street and Kansas Avenue.

“Our vision for the Joplin center is to better serve kids and families in need of substance abuse and behavioral health treatment, as well as being an important and positive component to the Joplin Community,” Michael T. Schwend, president and chief executive officer of Preferred Family Healthcare, said in a statement.

Also attending were Keith Shafer, director of the Department of Mental Health; state Rep. Charlie Davis, R-Webb City; and Rob O’Brian, president of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce.

The program will offer residential services, as well as outpatient substance abuse programming to adolescents and their families.
