NEOSHO, Mo. —
ACCESS Family Care has received a grant for $140,059 to help patients enroll for federal health insurance coverage through the new Health Insurance Marketplaces program or through existing Medicaid.
The money will actually be used to hire, train and certify outreach and enrollment specialists as part of the Affordable Care Act, which is informally known as Obamacare.
“The ACA is a moving target that changes as it progresses. The ability to provide dedicated and well-trained staff whose sole duty is to educate patients on increased opportunities for healthcare coverage will be a huge help for people eligible to enroll,” Debra Davidson, chief operations officer for Access, said in a statement.
In all, 22 Missouri community health centers received awards totaling more than $2.9 million. Those health center served 438,406 patients last year, and nearly 35 percent of them were uninsured. ACCESS said that 41 percent of the patients it served at medical and dental clinics in Southwest Missouri were uninsured.
With the funding, the 22 health cents in Missouri expect to hire 59 additional workers who will assist people with enrollment.
“ACCESS will continue to be there for those needing primary health and dental care and will have trained individuals to assist anyone in determining which healthcare plan from the new Insurance Marketplace best fits within their affordable needs,” said Davidson.
