Bright Futures receives grant from Mercy Clinic

JOPLIN, Mo. — A grant program of Mercy Clinic has awarded $5,000 to the Joplin School District’s Bright Futures campaign.

Mercy officials said in a statement making the announcement that they saw a need to aid food banks and other assistance programs for the homeless populations of Southwest Missouri. The recipients of the grants — five, including Bright Futures — all provide shelter, clothing or food to families in need.

Bright Futures, which launched in Joplin in 2010, provides basic assistance to children in crisis through partnerships between the schools and businesses and faith-based groups. It also includes a service-learning component that challenges children to identify and solve problems in their community.

This is the second donation that Bright Futures has received this week. On Monday, the organization was given a $10,000 check from Active Life Style Events Inc., which hosts the annual Joplin Memorial Run in remembrance of the victims of the 2011 tornado.

The Mercy program has also awarded a total of $95,000 in grants to the Rare Breed, sponsored by the Kitchen, Inc., of Springfield; Isabel’s House and the Crisis Nursery of the Ozarks; the clothing bank operated by the Springfield Council of PTAs; and Jesus Was Homeless, a meal program in Branson.

The program, named “Force for Good,” has given $1.48 million to charities and organizations in Southwest Missouri since its inception in 2003. Grants are awarded twice yearly.
