A stronger than expected January helped push up construction in the first quarter of Joplin’s fiscal year, according to building permits filed with the city.
Permits filed in January came to slightly more than $4.3 million. That compares with $8.5 million in building permits filed in January 2009, but last month’s figure is still stronger than those seen in recent months.
Construction reported in the Joplin city limits in January 2008 came to $3.4 million.
For the first three months of the city’s fiscal year, construction in Joplin came to nearly $9.2 million. That compares with nearly $16.8 million for the same period last year and $6.3 million for the same quarter one year before that.
Joplin’s fiscal year runs from Nov. 1 to Oct. 31.
The permit figures reflect only construction taking place inside the Joplin city limits and do not include construction in unincorporated areas around the city.
The largest permit filed in the city limits last month was for $3 million for offices for Allgeier, Martin & Associates to be built at 7231 E. 24th St. The contractor is Branco Enterprises of Neosho.
In the past three months, 10 permits have been filed for single-family homes in Joplin, valued at just under $1.37 million. Those figures compare with 11 permits valued at more than $1.4 million for the same period one year ago.
Three permits for new business construction have been filed in the first quarter, valued at $3.4 million, compared with six permits valued at more than $6.6 million for the comparable period one year earlier.
