MGE to unveil green home in Joplin on Saturday

JOPLIN, Mo. — Missouri Gas Energy will unveil what it is billing as “Joplin’s first reproducible green home” with an open house and block party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The home at 2215 W. 27th St. incorporates a number of energy-saving features designed to help the homeowner cut down on utility bills. It includes a complete Thermal Enclosure System with comprehensive air sealing and high-performance windows, a high-efficiency heating, ventilating and cooling system, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and a water management system to protect roofs, walls and foundations from water damage.

MGE, the natural gas distribution company for Joplin and other communities in western Missouri, launched the home as part of its Building Joplin project following the 2011 tornado.

The home is owned by Frank Schaffer, president of F.E. Schaffer Construction and a partner in the Building Joplin project. Schaffer’s mother lived at the address when the previous home was destroyed in the  tornado. He rebuilt using new technology that meets the highest energy-efficient standards.

Robert Painter, MGE’s manager of Energy Efficient Programs, said in a statement that the need to rebuild so many homes after the tornado presented the company with the opportunity to work with homeowners and those involved in the local construction industry to help them plan and build homes to reduce the amount of energy used on a day-to-day basis.

“We hope that the energy efficient home we are unveiling today will help foster public awareness on the significant energy savings and environmental benefits that can be achieved by building an energy efficient home,” he said in a statement. “Our hope is that going forward Joplin will be used as a model for other communities looking to reduce their energy consumption.”

Other partners in the “Building Joplin” project with Missouri Gas Energy and builder Frank Schaffer include Rheem, Kohler, General Electric, C&L Supply, Metro Appliances, B&G Drafting, GreenTown Joplin, Fiberlite Technologies, Accurate Rater Network, Ozark Nursery, Crane Home Energy and LP Tech Shield
