McCaskill attends Joplin business roundtable

— U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill fielded questions about the Affordable Care Act and other federal health care programs during a stop in Joplin on Wednesday.

The event held at the Joplin Chamber of Commerce was a business roundtable to focus on businesses that came back after the tornado in Joplin, which McCaskill said had received more than $350 million in federal funds for recovery.

In response to problems with Obamacare outlined by a couple of business owners, McCaskill said she did not disagree the federal program needs some fixes. But, she said Republicans aren’t interested in making any changes “because complaining about it is such a powerful political tool.”

“It’s not perfect, and I’m willing to work on changes to make it better. But it’s hard to find anybody on the other side to work on that.”

McCaskill, a Democrat, said she and Republican Sen. Roy Blunt are working together on a bill that would make available to states $50 billion in federal bond funds for transportation repairs.

She said the plan would not increase the deficit, but would help with projects like bridge repairs in Missouri, which ranks 10th in the U.S, in the number of deficient bridges.
