Transportation plan for south Joplin, Carterville interchange on tap for JATSO

JOPLIN, Mo. — A transportation plan for south Joplin and an interchange at Carterville are two items that will be on the agenda when the Joplin Area Transportation Study Organization (JATSO) Policy Board meets next week.

CJW Transportation Consultants, Springfield, will present its findings and recommendations after analyzing existing traffic patterns and making traffic count projections for south Joplin, based on future land use changes and development. The area is expected to undergo dramatic change as a result of construction of the new Mercy Hospital Joplin near 50th street and Hearnes Boulevard.

The company was selected to produce the transportation plan for an area roughly bordered by Interstate 44 to the north, Range Line Road to the east, 50th Street to the south, and Main Street/Hearnes Boulevard to the west, according to city officials.

Also on the agenda is a revision to the state’s Transportation Improvement Program, which includes Joplin-area projects that are partially federally funded over a four-year period, in this case 2011-2014.

The revision to the plan includes planning and construction of ramp improvements at the Missouri Highway 171 and Route HH interchange at Carterville.

Representatives from the Missouri Department of Transportation also will provide an update to the state’s Long-Range Transportation Plan, which serves as a guide future transportation development in the state.

The meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Joplin City Hall Basement Conference Room, 602 South Main St.
