Local business journal changes hands

JOPLIN, Mo. — Larry and Mikell Warren, with Atlas Risk Management, of Joplin, have taken over as publishers of the Joplin Tri-State Business Journal.

The journal, now in its eighth year in Joplin, was published by Jennifer Jackson, with Springfield Business Journal Publishing.

The transfer of ownership was announced during a news conference Wednesday afternoon at the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Dianne Osis, president of SBJ Publishing, said her company will now be able to focus solely on the Springfield business market. She said she was comfortable with the prospect that the Warrens would bring the same level of passion to the Joplin Tri-State Business Journal that she and its employees have.

She said the 2011 tornado confirmed what she already knew about Joplin — that it’s a close-knit community.

“We think the journal would be in better hands with a local owner,” she said.

Jackson said a lot of hard work was put into the creation of the journal, and that she and Osis “care very much about what happens to it.” She described the sale of the journal as “a bittersweet moment.”

She said the journal has added something to Joplin’s business community and that “the staff deserves local ownership to make it happen.”

The Warrens will retain Carole Liston as editor and David Mink as a reporter.

Jackson and Osis said a synergy exists between the business communities in Springfield and Joplin, and that it is likely the journals will collaborate on future projects.

Mikell Warren said she and her husband hope to make the Joplin journal a more regional publication by including more business news from Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma.

She said they also want to increase the journal’s involvement in social media.
