Voices: Labor unions

In response to Dave Woods’ column (Globe, April 20) concerning labor unions: After working for 60 years in both the non-union and union shops, I feel qualified to judge the merits and shortcomings of both.

I am wondering if the online contributors who were quoted in Dave’s column with such derogatory statements against labor unions had themselves ever worked in a union business or shop. I would guess not.

To those who are so opposed to labor unions, I would ask this question. Have you ever worked for a company or employer who offered a 40-hour, five-day work week, vacation pay, paid holidays, health care and retirement pay? How do you suppose the American worker came to receive all those liberal benefits when the 19th-century worker had none of them?

For your information, every single one of these great privileges was hammered out through the efforts and bargaining of labor unions during the first decade of the 20th century.

And be absolutely certain that no company or business owner has offered these benefits to non-union employees out of the generosity of their hearts. They were forced to do so to compete with the union businesses.

So those who have reaped the benefits of union negotiations over the past 100 years without paying one penny into union funds should be courteous enough to at least not vilify labor unions.

Incidentally, when our Joplin commercial sign shop voted in 1957 to join a labor union, it was not because of the ridiculous anti-union rhetoric of “less work and more pay.” Actually our wage scale was very fair. We joined because our working conditions and hours were still in the 19th century. The union went in, and contrary to anti-union claims and propaganda, the company prospered beautifully.
