Former Joplin resident, Betty Rutherford, turns 110 years old on Sunday, making her a member of the world’s “supercentarians” club — those who are 110 or older.
Betty was born in Joplin on May 4, 1898, and lived here until she was in her 20s. Her father, Thornton Bassett Jenkins was a cashier at the Joplin First National Bank.
Betty lived in three centuries, remembers the Wright Brothers flying at Kitty Hawk in 1903, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and women obtaining the right to vote in 1920.
On Sunday, Betty will celebrate her birthday with her two sons, her three grandchildren and her six great-grandchildren at the Rolling Hills Nursing Center in Batesville.
Even if you don’t know Betty, drop her a card. The address is 1680 Batesville Blvd., Batesville, Ark., 72501.
