High school voices: High-school students tackle variety of issues
Editor’s note: Students from Greenfield High School wrote letters to the Globe as part of an English assignment. The following are several of those submitted.
Rap doesn’t mean violence
Many people attribute rap music with violence and a high crime rate. Parents use rap music as a scapegoat, but I disagree with this 100 percent.
Rap arose from the depths of the ghetto where violence and high crime rates are present, and most all rappers have come from this setting.
Rappers’ lyrics are full of things they know and to which they can relate. You might have heard of Tupac’s “Thug Life.” Many hear this and think of guns, drugs and the mistreatment of women.
In reality, “Thug Life,” was a charity that raised more than $5 million to better the projects and schools of New York and Los Angeles. The East Coast/West Coat rap war was not intended to harm anyone or get anyone killed. It was created to see which coast had superior rhyming skills, technique, better instrumental quality and the larger fan base.
Contrary to popular belief, Tupac and “Biggie Smalls,” were friends involved in the Coast wars who were turned into enemies through outside media sources.
Neither one wished death on each other. It’s been said that a young person who listens to rap music is more likely to try a controlled substance than a young person who doesn’t listen to rap.
I myself have never tried weed because Tech N9ne or 50 Cent say that they “roll a fatty and blaze a blunt.”
And, I have never wanted to commit an armed robbery because Easy-E says he did a “two eleven.”
I believe that parents need to quit blaming rap music for how messed up their kids’ lives are and start taking responsibility for being horrible parents.
