Voices: Working together
The title of the article (Globe, April 30) was business as usual concerning our community when there is a supposed problem: “Opponents speak out.”
My reason for speaking out is that there was no “news” about those much less fortunate than ourselves until someone complained about zoning.
Our governing entities have given no solutions except to shut down an outlet that operates through private donations. All of a sudden, after two years, this has become unacceptable. How convenient.
If the property at Seventh Street and Pearl Avenue were being purchased by a socially prominent individual, discussion would be off limits. What is so amazing is that zoning of the existing building was held in strict opposition. Second, it is a financial venture between a church board and an individual who are both attempting to do action which would result in helping people less fortunate than the rest of us. Who are we deceiving? Except by the grace of God, there go I.
But that doesn’t fit for those of professional culture. Do you suppose this individual’s position would be different if he or she were to be confronted with hard times beyond control — and become homeless?
When will we applaud when someone is attempting to promote improvement instead of saying “that’s bad for our community; not in my back yard”?
While the wheels of governing entities move, the 500 to 800 homeless will quickly overcome that slow pace. Do you understand that individuals enter our midst on an almost weekly basis having paid their debt to society? Do you understand they are not accepted back into our community? That presents an interesting question. What is the real problem? Is it the homeless or our prejudice? No one can fix this except you and I, working together.
