I can’t believe the controversy surrounding the City of Refuge. Why is this such an issue for so many people that they are actually signing a petition? Dan Anderson is trying to do a good thing and help people in our community. Why is this such a problem for a lot of supposed “Christian” people?
Does no one remember the huge ice storm that hit our community just a few short months ago? A lot of people in Joplin and the surrounding area were displaced from their homes. Did the ice storm not affect Nancy Morton or anyone else who thinks like her about the homeless?
The majority of homeless people are not homeless by choice. And a lot of people in our community are just a couple of paychecks away from being homeless due to rising prices and the cost of living (bills, utilities, gas, food) and wages staying the same.
I hope that the people on the church board see what Dan Anderson is trying to do for the people who have hit hard times and help him.
Instead of passing around petitions against the purchase of this building, why not help Mr. Anderson? If you do not want a shelter in your neighborhood, find them another option. There are empty buildings all over Joplin. Help him find one that is suitable for his cause.
If I claimed to be a Christian and signed this petition or wrote some of the comments I have read online in regards to the City of Refuge, I would be ashamed of myself. Since when is the value of property more important than human life and well-being? It is not!
As a “Christian” community, we should be doing everything in our power to help them not hold them down.
Keep in mind the economy is getting a lot worse. Enjoy your businesses and homes while you can (all your property and possessions). You may be one of these people in our community needing shelter soon.
Why don’t we give them a chance and a helping hand?
