Published May 06, 2008 11:17 pm - There are no easy answers to the problems facing Joplin’s homeless community. We believe the members of the Joplin City Council who voted to allow the City of Refuge to operate a shelter for an additional 90 days in its current location are to be commended.
In our view: Call the summit
There are no easy answers to the problems facing Joplin’s homeless community.
We believe the members of the Joplin City Council who voted to allow the City of Refuge to operate a shelter for an additional 90 days in its current location are to be commended.
Council members Jim West, Bill Scearce, Benjamin Rosenberg, Jon Tupper and Melodee Colbert-Kean did the right thing when they granted pastor Dan Anderson a little more time to find a suitable location for his homeless shelter.
Tonight, members of the First Baptist Church will be faced with a similar decision when they vote on whether to sell the church at Seventh Street and Pearl Avenue to Anderson to use as a permanent refuge for his flock.
If City of Refuge can meet the price, we see no reason why the congregation shouldn’t vote to sell.
For weeks, Anderson and the residents of Joplin have been waiting on the Joplin City Council to call a community summit to address the needs of Joplin’s burgeoning homeless population.
Weeks ago, former Mayor Tupper called for the summit to focus and streamline the resources needed on an issue that’s not going away.
We are still waiting.
City Manager Mark Rohr, on Monday, told the council that the city has been gathering information, and “there’s a lot more involved than we thought.”
It is hard to imagine that it has taken city officials this long to collect details about a problem that has been staring Joplin in the face for more years than we can count.
Enough talk. Now is the time for Joplin’s new Mayor Gary Shaw to lead.
We believe Shaw needs to set a date to bring all the players around the table who currently provide services for Joplin residents who may not have a voice in the process, let alone a roof over their heads.
It would be easy to continue to stall the meeting, using the excuse that more information needs to be collected.
Mayor, find a calendar.
