This passage, written by one of our online viewers, says everything you need to know about the actions of Tyler Casey, a 21-year-old Seneca Area Fire Protection District volunteer who likely saved the lives of three people before Saturday’s tornado killed him. And, if you go to http://safpd.org, the Web site for the Seneca Area Fire Protection District, you will find page after page of tributes to Casey, written by friends, family and strangers. The young man was positioned Saturday at Missouri Highway 43 and Iris Road in Newton County, where he had been dispatched to watch for tornadoes. When he saw one coming, he didn’t run for cover — which would have been the most natural action. Instead, Casey warned at least three people to take cover — a man changing a tire and two people in a nearby home. All three escaped the powerful tornado unscathed. Not so for Casey, who was unable to get out of the path of the storm. He died on Monday. Andy Nimmo, Redings Mill fire chief, has said that there were those who were critical of the young man’s decision to stay out in the storm. “I’ve already had people saying that (Tyler Casey) shouldn’t have been out there, but I say (firefighters) shouldn’t run into burning buildings either, but we do. What we try to do is help other people. (Casey) did his job.” The world needs more people who, like Tyler Casey, are willing to put themselves aside as they try to help others. We commend the actions of the young man, and extend our sympathies to his family, his 2-year-old daughter and to his fiancee, who is expecting his child. Tyler Casey stood tall when it counted.
