Dave Woods: Online viewers mourn losses

It’s hard for me to imagine the pain the families who lost property and loved ones must be feeling in the wake of the storms that devastated parts of Northeast Oklahoma and Southwest Missouri.

The last thing the people of Picher needed was another challenge to overcome. Newton County residents left homeless — or who suffered the deaths of friends and family — are still mourning their losses and beginning to rebuild.

On the Saturday evening when tornadoes cut a path of pain through our area, I had little knowledge of kind of destruction the twisters had caused. Soon after details of the damage started rolling into the Globe newsroom, I began posting updates online. Within minutes of posting the first information on the storm damage sustained, our online users began remembering those lost, recounting their experiences and submitting story comments at joplinglobe.com.

‘Rountrees remembered’

“I knew the Rountrees very well! I feel so awful for their daughter who has no one but friends now. You could always rely on them for a smile, a good thought for the day, and help when you needed it. I know they are in a better place but it was still something that ruined this Mother’s Day knowing that two wonderful mothers have passed away.”

— Jami

“My son Jordan was a friend of Clayton (Rountree). He just found out today about what happened. Our hearts, and thoughts go out to the family members. Kali, knowing of all the drastic changes that you are now dealing with, it’s not easy. Just know you’re not alone. Take care.”

— Debi

“My heart goes out to this entire family that lost so many people. It’s hard to put into words what to say. I didn’t even know the Rountree family and they sounded like amazing people. I’m sure they are in a better place now. I go to school with Kali, my thoughts and prayers are with you. God Bless you Kali!”

— Kalyn Thompson

‘Firefighter mourned’

“I know Tyler Casey and his family and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. This is so tragic and my heart goes out to Tyler’s mom, Rayma, Josh, Brandon and their baby sister Kayla.”

— Cassie Villandry

“To the Casey family ... all of us at Sweetwater are keeping you in our prayers!”

— Lisa H.
