Published May 19, 2008 09:28 pm - I found your editorial on Sunday, April 27, 2008, about the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition highly offensive. Whether it was written by one individual or was a collaborative effort by the editorial staff, it was evident that the writer had never attended an MSIPC event. If they had, there would have been no mention that the competition should be for people from all walks of life.
Voices: Demeaning editorial
I found your editorial on Sunday, April 27, 2008, about the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition highly offensive. Whether it was written by one individual or was a collaborative effort by the editorial staff, it was evident that the writer had never attended an MSIPC event. If they had, there would have been no mention that the competition should be for people from all walks of life.
I attended every performance. All week long, those who attended the events (free to all senior citizens and students, with the general public paying for only two events out of 12 offered) included: young and old; working; retired; unemployed people; home-schooled, public- and private-schooled children; university students from the Joplin area; and people from other states beyond the Four-State Area. I met several from far distances who arranged their family visits to Joplin so that they could attend the piano competition. One such person is Larry Moss from Bellingham, Wash., who has come four different times because there is nothing like this in the Seattle area.
Music lovers embrace all types of music and appreciate the skill, emotion and technique of performance. The artists’ programs went way beyond the classics and included contemporary composers from the 20th century.
It is amazing what MSIPC has achieved in 20 years under the direction of Vivian Leon: enormous recognition for Joplin and Missouri Southern State University, not to mention attracting outstanding musicians for our community to enjoy. I heard from competitors, their parents and teachers, and judges from such places as Beijing, Shanghai, San Francisco, Denver, Phoenix, Seoul, Berlin, New York and Chicago who repeated their delight at being here, the high caliber of the competition, and the wonderful hospitality found in Joplin and on campus. In fact, they all agreed that it was the best organized competition they had ever attended anywhere in the world.
To say that MSIPC is off to a good start after 20 years is demeaning. Mrs. Leon and her committee have worked tirelessly during those years to continue to improve and offer something truly remarkable. I am so proud of MSIPC and what has been accomplished and the way it spotlights our community.
